I worked at clearing the viruses from the computers listed on the server. Only had about 12 computers to clean. Then an issue came up with people not being able to log in so I looked at it as a computer problem. After a few minutes of research, OK maybe an hour, I realized that we were probably out of available IPs. I had Kevin check the DHCP and that was it. 40 to 254 was in use. He was able to free up about ten allowing enough for everyone to get back to work.
OK, now for the kicker!
After letting the team know what was happening I went to the network area and ran into Heidi who stated she was coming looking for me. As we do not have much interaction I assumed it was for the job opening that closed yesterday. Yep, it was.
She started off with there were two people that applied for the job. Of course! Steve, I heard they were planning on putting him in it before it was advertised, and myself. In the conversation she stated she thought he was better qualified and flat out told her I disagree. I stated he has a AS400 programming background and is good with Unix (actually things Steve has told me in the past). She said he has been working on the servers since 2007 so I shot back with I have worked with the server, routers and other tasks since 2000 in this agency. She then said this was actually a way to promote him as some things have changed and they were having a tough time getting authorization so they went this route. I was amazed she said it. First off since I have been in the agency since 2000 and have not had a promotion since 2003! I keep being told I am great and I do great work, but as my position has no more levels there is no way to promote me. I know this truly sucks, but it is the way it is when you hit the top of the career latter in your position!!
I told her if she was not going to do serious interviews I did not want to waste my time. I actually made this statement more than once so when I left the office without setting an interview I knew that they probably never looked at my application.
I was upset. Felt similar to being demoted back in 2007 without any viable explanation.
I ran across Derek( Derek has come a long way over the years and I am real proud of him.) and explained this to him and said I should talk to Dana. I happened to see her a minute or two later and mentioned I need a few minutes of her time when she has some today.
I did not hear back from her by three PM so I looked for her and could not find her. It was about 40 minutes later she found me. I went to her office and explained what transpired. I also told her about the other positions I applied for. She asked if I wanted her to pull the paperwork that they already submitted for Steve to have the position, but that would not change their way of thinking and I really did not want to upset the manager I would be working for so I said no, but thanks for asking.
OK, this is the shortest version I could put down as I hate typing!
I need to go edit video so this will conclude my rant. I am stuck at a dead end in my position and would leave if I did not care so much about the agency as whole. OK my direct management I pray would change, but that will not happen any time soon so I need to sit tight and shut up or change companies!
