A few nut mixes I enjoy.

These ratios of any combination

1 cp Sunflower 🌻 seeds
1/2 cp Soybeans
1/2 cp Wasabi peas
1/2 cp sesame sticks
1/2 cp almonds
1/2 cp peanuts

I also have used a coffee grinder to powder spices. I have ground
ranch dressing
chilli powder
garlic powder
onion powder
sugar.
I have not mixed them, but they add nicely to nuts or popcorn for flavorings.

Homemade Seasoned Salt

Although we’re trying to cut the amount of sodium we consume, we’re not about to stop sprinkling it on steaks, burgers, ribs, or chops. This seasoned salt plus some wood chips on the coals add such a fantastic flavor!

I don’t feel guilty about using this liberally. That’s because using fresh herbs and spices means you can cut down on the amount of salt needed. This homemade Lawry’s seasoned salt contains considerably less sodium than that jar from the store, but it works the same flavor magic.

CUTTING SALT?

Are you trying to cut your sodium intake? Whether it’s just for general health reasons or you have to reduce your sodium consumption for medical reasons, this copycat Mrs. Dash may be your answer.

Have you checked the prices of specialty seasoning blends? Some are so expensive, I get sticker shock when I look. This is one of the main reasons I try to find a copycat version.

Another reason is that so much prepared food tastes very salty to me as I got older. I don’t have any dietary restrictions either, but when my late husband had to reduce his salt/sodium intake, I had to change the way I seasoned food. The kicker is that I did lose my own taste for too much salt. Even though I no longer have to cook for a dietary restriction, I never picked up the habit again of arbitrarily using salt at the table.

Nowadays, there are many Mrs. Dash varieties sold, but back then, all we had was the original one. We loved it too–especially on chicken.

MACE IS STRONG

Mace is a very strongly flavored spice.

The original version of this recipe called for an equal amount with the other herbs. If you like mace, fine.

However, it can overpower everything else. This is the reason I give a range of amounts for it. My suggestion is to start with the lowest amount. Mix everything up and if you feel you want to add more, then mix additional amounts in.

I’m pretty sure that mace is not on everyone’s pantry shelf. I make donuts, so that’s why I have it (it’s the common spice in cake donuts). You may have to buy it for this, but don’t despair–it’s used in other things such as donuts, cakes and in sausage seasoning!
